So What?

Translating AI news and trends into real implications for talent development leaders.

Virginia is for lovers…of AI, that is!

Virginia is for lovers has been Virginia’s slogan since 1969. Through the years it has meant to attract lovers of various things. Today, it means lovers of AI, or those who adapt it to their jobs.

As the hotspot for AI adoption – and disruption –  the state saw the fastest growth in ChatGPT use nationwide last year. Business use has more than doubled and 1.5 million jobs statewide are estimated to be affected. Not eliminated, but automated, reshaped or reduced.

So what?

There is opportunity here. As employers actively seek AI-skilled talent, it’s not about job loss at all. It’s about who’s ready and who’s not.

Employers aren’t killing jobs at scale. They’re redesigning them, especially at entry-level roles, to take advantage of AI for efficiency and productivity. New roles are being created fast – more than 600,000 AI-related jobs in the U.S. alone – and governments and companies are pouring money into AI training and literacy.

So what?

Most people still don’t know how to use AI beyond the basics. The gap is the story. Getting talent continually upskilled, and even ready right out of school, is what’s needed now. The gap isn’t AI vs. human. It’s AI-fluent vs. AI-ineffective.

So what?

Companies need to invest at least as much into AI capability as they are AI tools.

  • When companies offer AI training, adoption jumps from 25% to 76%.
  • Employees are more loyal when they’re being upskilled, not replaced.
  • The biggest risk isn’t technology failure—it’s a workforce that can’t keep up.

After all, the companies that win won’t be the ones with the best AI tools.

They’ll be the ones with people who know how to use them—fluently, confidently and creatively.
